It’s official: Appleton Coworking is now officially a non-profit organization. We’ve been going since 2015 with this as a foregone conclusion, organizing with the State of Wisconsin as a non-stock corporation, but now we have official recognition from the IRS as a 501(c)3.
What does this mean for us? The most obvious effect is immediately that we will not need to pay taxes on most of our income. This is a pretty small thing since we’ve been operating close to zero net revenue, but with such a small amount of income, every bit counts.
Another effect is that we will now be able to accept tax-deductible, charitable donations. We are hoping to start sharing our vision with the wider community about the kind of place we are trying to create over the next few months, and we believe that as more people see where we are heading, there will be strong interest from individuals and businesses to pitch in to make this space an amazing community resource for education and innovation.
Beyond that, we are feeling relieved and grateful that the process is finally complete. A huge thank you to Michael Kieffer, our treasurer, who put in the lions share of volunteer hours, filling out forms, and the back-and-forth with our lawyer, to make this a reality. It took a lot people pitching in to make this happen, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. After all, this is a community endeavor.
